Now Trending: Phytochemicals

As we enter 2025, research continues to unveil the incredible potential of phytochemicals. Be on the lookout for more information in the news on the connection between food and health throughout the year. Here are three areas that I’ll be keeping an eye on!

1. Phytochemicals and Gut Health

The connection between gut health and overall well-being is better understood now than ever before, and phytochemicals are taking center stage. Polyphenols found in foods like berries, cocoa and tea help decrease inflammation in GI related disease and act as prebiotics, nourishing beneficial gut bacteria (Pantalos et al, 2024). These interactions support digestion, reduce inflammation, and even influence immunity. Look for more studies and products focusing on gut microbiome-friendly phytochemicals this year!

How can you focus on gut health?

  • Track your phytochemical consumption and your corresponding gut health. Look for changes in digestion or energy levels.
  • Shop for gut-friendly foods, such as legumes, cruciferous vegetables, and berries, or grow them in your garden, or in a community garden.
  • Advocate for farmers’ markets or produce prescription programs that provide access to these foods.
  • Find gut health seminars with guest speakers, such as dietitians, to learn more about phytochemicals.

2. Phytochemicals and Mental Health

Could a diet rich in phytochemicals improve mood and memory? New research suggests the answer is, yes. Compounds like flavonoids in citrus fruits and anthocyanins in berries may reduce stress, enhance memory and protect against age-related cognitive decline (Picheta et al, 2024). Expect to see mental health experts recommending phytochemical-rich diets alongside traditional therapies in 2025.

How can you focus on mental health?

  • Journal your mood and diet to observe possible connections between eating patterns and emotional health.
  • Observe mental health days that include meals with phytochemical-rich ingredients.
  • Share easy, budget-friendly recipes among family and friends that combine mental health-boosting phytochemicals.

3. Phytochemicals and Longevity

The search for the fountain of youth is as old as time. Research is showing that plant foods can be an important key to longevity. Phytochemicals like resveratrol (grapes), sulforaphane (broccoli sprouts), and EGCG (green tea) are being studied for their ability to activate longevity pathways, reduce oxidative stress and support cellular health (Shen et al, 2022). This year, longevity-focused foods featuring these compounds will likely show up more in the news. Take a look at THIS article from the Denver Health Medical Plan blog.

How can you focus on longevity?

  • Start every day with longevity in mind (try a blueberry-spinach smoothie or a turmeric and green tea latte).
  • Plan your snacks. They might include nuts and dried fruit.
  • Share information through newsletters or social media on incorporating longevity-promoting foods into daily life.
